PS5 jailbreak: the update came 13 days earlier

Posted 16 Oct 2026

On 29 September 2026 several outlets reported a public jailbreak for the PlayStation 5, working on consoles running system software up to 13.60, including the PS5 Pro (Kotaku, Decrypt, Insider Gaming). The press says it starts in the console's built-in web browser and then reaches the core of the system, the kernel. Reported uses include homebrew apps, emulators and game backups, with piracy the chief worry. Reports also warn of PlayStation Network bans.

What the Short had no room for. First, the update that shuts it out is 14.00, released on 16 September, before the jailbreak went public. Sony's update notes for 14.10, around 1 October, say only that Sony made "some security fixes". Sony has not said what they fix, and Notebookcheck notes the company did not acknowledge targeting any exploit.

Second, owners face a trade-off. Newer games begin to require newer system software, so updating means losing the jailbreak. Sony tells owners to keep the console updated, and its PlayStation Network terms in section 10.6 forbid bypassing security mechanisms. Whether an updated console can go back is disputed in the press, so we leave it out.
